Portable linux-live-installation on a 4GB usb-stick
This installation method makes a copy of the linux (Xubuntu) install-cd but also gives the opportunity to save some on the disk.....like desktop settings, updates, extra applications etc.
For this Xubuntu "persistent installation" I used a guide I found in the internet. To avoid a broken link, or other way's to loose track of it, I decided to addept the howtoo on my site. This way it has better acces, to be used as reference for the additional setups.

The process of installing Xubuntu 9.04 to a USB flash drive using Windows:
There are several way's to do this with linux but with Windows (xp) it works real fast and easy.
Xubuntu is product of Canonical ltd that is based on Ubuntu but utilizes the XFCE desktop environment. Xubuntu is designed to use less resources than it's counterparts, making it a great Linux OS to run portably from a USB flash drive or USB Hard Drive.
What's needed for creating a Xubuntu 9.04 Live USB:
* Windows PC to perform conversion
* Xubuntu 9.04 ISO (32bits version for more compatibility)
* 2GB or larger USB flash drive (Fat32 formatted)
* XU904p.exe (contains the files to do the conversion)
How to Create a Live USB Xubuntu 9.04 Flash Drive:
Download and launch XU904p.exe, extracting to your computer. A XU904p folder is automatically created.
Download the Xubuntu 9.04
Copy the Xubuntu 9.04 ISO to the XU904 folder on your PC
From the XU904 folder, click XU904.bat and follow the onscreen instructions
Once the script has finished, restart your PC and set your BIOS or Boot Menu to boot from the USB device, save your changes and reboot
You should now have your own personal Live USB Xubuntu 9.04 that will also save most of the changes that you make back to the USB device, restoring them on subsequent boots.
Persistence size:
The default casper-rw loop file that becomes the partition for saving changes is only 1GB. If you have room and would prefer to use more space for saving changes you can download one of the following zip files and extract the new casper-rw file to your USB device, replacing the old one.
You will lose any saved changes by replacing your casper-rw file with one listed above!
Tip:
I was only able to squeeze in the 3GB casper after I erased the disk in OSX (format as fat32) with the (security) option "zero to disk".........it just gave me the extra 50mb
This picture shows the settings to make Xfce look like OSX.
